Project Overview:
When COVID-19 disrupted lives and livelihoods, N4ED launched a handmade facemask initiative to help mothers in the Entoto area earn income while staying safe. Four dedicated mothers — Mulu, Etenesh, Genet, and Million — stood out for their exceptional craftsmanship and determination. Their commitment opened the door to a six-month machine-sewing scholarship with Shega Crafts. Upon graduating in July 2021, they pursued their dream of starting a sewing business, which N4ED supported through the provision of two professional sewing machines. With raw materials self-funded, the group quickly launched their business and began fulfilling numerous orders within weeks.
Objectives / Goals:
Target Audience / Beneficiaries:
Women from the Entoto area, particularly mothers who have graduated from N4ED’s skills training programs and are motivated to run small businesses.
Methodology / Approach:
The mothers first participated in N4ED’s facemask production initiative. Their skills earned them scholarships for advanced sewing training at Shega Crafts. After completing their training, N4ED equipped them with professional sewing machines, while they invested in raw materials themselves. Their business model combines made-to-order garments with plans for a future workshop and product display space.
