Prevention 2 Recovery: Addis Ababa
Enhancing Support and Services for Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Survivors

Project Overview

Supported by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and the French Embassy in Ethiopia in collaboration with the African Union, this project aims to strengthen protection, support, and recovery services for survivors of gender-based violence in Addis Ababa.

The initiative focuses on establishing and operating a safe shelter for women and girls, providing integrated, survivor-centered services including case management, psychosocial support, and referrals to health, legal, and social services. By addressing critical gaps in emergency accommodation and coordinated care, the project contributes to creating a safer and more responsive support system for survivors.

Objectives

  • Deliver comprehensive survivor-centered services, including case management, psychosocial support, and emergency assistance 
  • Strengthen referral pathways and coordination among health, legal, and social service providers 
  • Support long-term recovery, empowerment, and reintegration of survivors 

Target Audience

The project primarily serves women and girls who are survivors of gender-based violence in Addis Ababa, especially those in urgent need of safe shelter and protection.

It also supports frontline service providers such as social workers, healthcare professionals, and law enforcement actors, while indirectly benefiting families and communities through improved access to coordinated services.

Approach

  • Establish and operate a safe shelter providing temporary accommodation and essential services 
  • Deliver individualized case management, including psychosocial counseling and follow-up support 
  • Facilitate access to medical, legal, and social services through structured referral systems 
  • Provide life skills and wellbeing activities to support healing and reintegration 
  • Strengthen coordination through referral pathway workshops and collaboration platforms 

Expected Outcomes

  • A safe, functional shelter providing immediate protection for survivors 
  • Improved wellbeing, safety, and recovery outcomes for beneficiaries 
  • Strengthened coordination among GBV service providers in Addis Ababa
