Women’s Economic Empowerment

N4ED empowers women through a structured, phased approach that begins with the Self-Help Group (SHG) component. This foundational aspect fosters peer support and collaboration among women, building strong community networks where members can share resources, knowledge, and encouragement.

N4ED conducts economic empowerment using several phases:

Phase 1: Basic life and business skills are provided alongside the cultivation of a savings culture and micro-loans. This initial phase focuses on equipping women with essential skills to manage their finances and start thinking about entrepreneurship. Introducing women to loans during this phase helps them begin their financial literacy journey.

Phase 2: Women are enabled to join the formal or semi-formal market. N4ED provides seed capital, mid-level business skills, technical training tailored to their chosen product types, and assistance in finding locations to conduct their business, in partnership with local authorities such as woredas and sub-cities.

Phase 3: This phase aims to help women grow their market reach and improve their product quality. N4ED facilitates the acquisition of advanced life and business skills to ensure that participants can become competitive, secure sustained income, and maintain motivation.

This approach has been designed based on the grassroots experience of N4ED, which has worked with marginalized families for several years. The organization has witnessed firsthand their needs, competencies, and behaviors. By gradually adapting women to entrepreneurial life, this program enables them to acquire the necessary skills to overcome both technical and adaptive challenges.

Additionally, N4ED seeks to incorporate technology in financial management wherever possible, in partnership with tech companies, to enhance women’s financial independence.

Through these initiatives, N4ED is committed to enhancing women’s financial independence and fostering sustainable economic growth within communities. This will enable two key things:

  • Women will play their vital role in the development of their children, as women’s financial independence has a direct impact on the well-being of families and communities as a whole.
  • It will make women independent and less vulnerable to abuse, increasing their decision-making power and helping them lead fulfilled and dignified lives.
