Rebuilding Chicken Businesses

Project Overview (Introduction)

As part of our ongoing Women’s Economic Empowerment program, N4ED supports women to launch and sustain microenterprises. From urban farming to poultry production, these businesses are helping women recover from economic shocks and build long-term resilience.

Objectives / Goals

  • To strengthen women’s economic independence through sustainable business models.
  • To restore and grow income-generating activities interrupted by crises.
  • To increase access to skills, tools, and markets for low-income women.

Target Audience / Beneficiaries

Women and mothers from low-income urban communities, many of whom faced severe income loss during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 poultry epidemic.

Methodology / Approach

N4ED works closely with local women to co-design business models based on their interests and resources. Interventions include training in urban farming, poultry management, and cooperative sales, combined with mentoring, group formation, and access to startup capital or replacement assets.

Impact / Expected Outcomes

To date, dozens of women have re-established or launched small businesses and urban farms. Following setbacks like the poultry epidemic, beneficiaries were able to bounce back, diversify income sources, and contribute to household and community wellbeing. The program has created a foundation for long-term economic stability and self-reliance.

Time

Ongoing since 2020

Donor / Sponsored
