Prevention 2 Recovery: Dire Dawa
Enhancing Support and Services for Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Survivors

Project Overview

Supported by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and the French Embassy in Ethiopia in collaboration with the African Union, this project aims to strengthen protection, support, and recovery systems for survivors of gender-based violence in Dire Dawa.

The initiative focuses on expanding coordinated, survivor-centered services while promoting community awareness and long-term systemic change. By combining direct support with advocacy and capacity building, the project addresses both immediate needs of survivors and the broader social norms that perpetuate violence.

Objectives

  • Strengthen community and institutional engagement in preventing and addressing GBV
  • Expand access to survivor-centered services, including case management and psychosocial support
  • Promote economic empowerment and long-term reintegration of survivors
  • Increase public awareness and dialogue through advocacy and media engagement

Target Audience

The project primarily serves women and girls who are survivors of gender-based violence in Dire Dawa, while also including male survivors who often face limited access to appropriate services.

It further engages frontline service providers, local authorities, youth leaders, and community members to strengthen institutional response and promote lasting behavioral change within communities.

Approach

  • Conduct community awareness campaigns, youth engagement, and dialogue sessions to challenge harmful norms
  • Develop and broadcast a legal dramatization series to raise awareness on GBV laws and survivor rights
  • Provide structured case management linking survivors to health, legal, and psychosocial services
  • Support economic empowerment through self-help groups, vocational training, and business support
  • Deliver trauma-informed psychosocial support for survivors and frontline responders
  • Strengthen coordination and referral systems among service providers and institutions

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased awareness and community engagement in GBV prevention
  • Improved access to coordinated and survivor-centered services
  • Strengthened institutional capacity to respond to GBV cases
  • Enhanced economic resilience and psychosocial recovery for survivors
  • Improved collaboration across sectors supporting long-term GBV response
